Virginia theranostics program takes shape with Sentara-BAMF
The joint venture is intended to combine radiopharmaceutical production, molecular imaging, molecular therapy, and clinical trials in a vertically integrated model.
Sentara Health and BAMF Health are forming a joint venture to create what they describe as Virginia’s first comprehensive vertically integrated theranostics program.
The program is designed to combine radiopharmaceutical production, molecular imaging, molecular therapy, and clinical trials. Sentara said it already offers molecular imaging through PET/CT scanning, while BAMF Health specializes in designing, building, and operating vertically integrated theranostics centers.
Cancer will be the initial clinical focus. The companies also said clinical trials are investigating theranostics applications for neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular conditions, and other diseases.
Theranostics uses molecular imaging to identify disease targets, followed by radiopharmaceutical therapy directed at those targets. Sentara described the approach as precision medicine using molecular features of a patient’s disease to guide diagnosis and treatment.
Radiation-safety infrastructure is part of the planned program. Sentara said it is supporting regulatory and compliance requirements because theranostics involves radioactive medications.
BAMF Health said the program will serve patients across Virginia and the surrounding region. The company also said the venture will expand access to radiopharmaceutical therapies and related clinical trials.
The partnership follows BAMF Health’s other theranostics expansion work. In April, BAMF Health and Henry Ford Health broke ground on a 45,000-square-foot comprehensive theranostics center in downtown Detroit, according to BAMF’s news page.
Sentara is an integrated, not-for-profit health system with 12 hospitals in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, more than 400 sites of care, and more than 2,000 physicians and advanced practice providers, according to BAMF’s release.
