Philips SmartIQ aims to cut coronary imaging radiation dose
The coronary imaging technology adds an ultra-low-dose protocol for Philips’ Azurion image-guided therapy platform and is available in Europe and selected markets.
Philips has introduced SmartIQ, a coronary imaging technology for its Azurion image-guided therapy platform. The technology is designed to improve coronary image quality while reducing radiation exposure for patients and clinical staff, according to the company.
SmartIQ includes an ultra-low-dose protocol for coronary procedures. Philips said the protocol uses more than 50% less X-ray radiation dose than the lowest dose settings available with its ClarityIQ platform.
A first blinded clinical pilot study was published in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions. Philips said the algorithm scored higher on image quality and was preferred in most blinded comparisons while maintaining or lowering radiation and contrast dose.
ClarityIQ has previously been associated with radiation exposure reductions between 23% and 83%, depending on the clinical area, according to Philips. SmartIQ builds on that platform for coronary imaging.
RADIQAL, an ongoing trial, is assessing SmartIQ’s effect on radiation dose compared with ClarityIQ while maintaining procedural performance. Philips said the study has reached 60% of total enrollment and completed enrollment at European sites.
At EuroPCR 2026 in Paris, Philips will show SmartIQ alongside other image-guided therapy technologies, including IntraSight Plus, DeviceGuide, VeriSight Pro 3D ICE, and Hemo R2.
SmartIQ has received CE mark and is available in Europe and selected markets on new and existing Azurion systems. Philips said the technology has not yet received U.S. FDA clearance.
