KA Imaging wins INOVAIT support for spectral X-ray AI

The $150,000 Pilot Fund award will support development of an AI triage tool using Reveal 35C spectral X-ray data, with a demonstration expected in 2027.

KA Imaging has received INOVAIT Pilot Fund support for an AI triage project using spectral X-ray imaging data.

The $150,000 award will fund development of an AI-based tool for detecting cardiothoracic abnormalities relevant to image-guided interventions, according to the company.

Reveal 35C data will be used for the project. KA Imaging said the detector uses SpectralDR technology to perform single-exposure dual-energy imaging.

The planned tool is intended to flag suspected findings before and after image-guided interventions. Listed findings include pulmonary nodules, consolidation, pleural fluid, pneumothorax, foreign bodies, and other abnormalities.

KA Imaging said the software is being designed to assist non-radiologist clinicians in identifying potential findings and prioritizing cases for review within existing imaging workflows.

The project includes collaboration with Elliot Creager, PhD, at the University of Waterloo. KA Imaging said his work focuses on AI and machine learning methods for complex data analysis.

A software demonstration is expected in 2027. After development, validation, and regulatory clearances, KA Imaging said the technology could be evolved into deployable AI software for its mobile spectral X-ray systems.

“Programs run by networks like INOVAIT create the connections between researchers, clinicians, and industry that help turn promising technologies into practical healthcare solutions,” said Amol Karnick, president and CEO of KA Imaging.

INOVAIT describes the Pilot Fund as a non-dilutive funding program for collaborative research and development projects in image-guided therapy and AI. Recent Pilot Fund projects receive up to $150,000 and typically run for 9 to 15 months.
