Hancock PET/CT campaign gets $1M memorial gift

Carole Bloodgood’s donation will help Hancock Health Foundation fund a permanent on-site PET/CT scanner as demand has risen 60% over 3 years.

Hancock Health Foundation has received a $1M donation from longtime Greenfield, IN, resident Carole Bloodgood to help fund a permanent on-site PET/CT scanner at Hancock Health. The gift is part of the foundation’s $3M Future in Focus campaign, according to Hancock Health.

The health system currently relies on a mobile PET/CT scanner that is available once per week. Hancock Health said the permanent system is intended to reduce appointment delays and improve access to advanced diagnostic imaging in the region.

Bloodgood made the gift in memory of her husband, Tom Bloodgood. The couple lived in Greenfield for 60 years before relocating to Columbus, IN, in 2023 to be closer to family while Tom received full-time care.

Tom Bloodgood received multiple PET/CT scans at Hancock Health as part of his care plan. Hancock Health said the couple experienced scheduling challenges and weather-related complications tied to use of the mobile scanner.

“Tom believed strongly in giving back,” Carole Bloodgood said in the Hancock Health announcement. She said the gift would support care for other patients and families in the community.

Demand for PET/CT scans at Hancock Health has increased by 60% over the past 3 years, according to the foundation. PET/CT imaging is used to help detect cancer, heart disease, and neurological conditions by showing how organs and tissues are functioning.

Julia Compton, MD, vice president of Hancock Health’s oncology service line, said an on-site PET/CT scanner would help physicians diagnose and treat patients more quickly and accurately. Foundation leaders said the donation moves the campaign closer to equipment purchase and space preparation.
