ABK Biomedical plans Missouri site for Eye90 Y-90 microspheres

The Ashland, MO, facility will support commercial-scale production of Eye90 microspheres, a Y-90 radioembolization device in clinical development for liver cancer.

ABK Biomedical is partnering with COR Development to establish a commercial manufacturing facility for Eye90 microspheres in Ashland, MO. The site will be located at Cartwright Business Park and constructed by Coil Construction.

Eye90 microspheres are a Y-90 radioembolization device in clinical development for liver cancer treatment. The Missouri facility will serve as ABK’s commercial-scale production site as the company advances the device toward full commercialization.

Site selection was partly driven by proximity to the University of Missouri Research Reactor, or MURR. ABK said MURR is the only domestic producer of the Y-90 radioisotope used in Eye90 microspheres.

The company said the short distance between the Ashland facility and MURR provides a supply-chain advantage for time-sensitive radioisotope production. ABK and MURR recently signed a long-term agreement naming MURR as the primary irradiation partner for Eye90 microspheres.

Eye90 has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration breakthrough device designation, according to ABK. The technology is designed to enable multimodality imaging after implantation, allowing physicians to assess microsphere distribution after the procedure.

ABK’s research page describes Eye90 as using a proprietary imageable glass composition for visualization with fluoroscopy, X-ray, and CT imaging modalities. The company is also developing Eye90 microspheres Precision Dosimetry for imaging and dosimetry analysis in liver tumor treatment.

“Establishing this commercial footprint is another major milestone for ABK,” said Mike Mangano, president and CEO of ABK Biomedical.
