Aura 10 case links specimen PET/CT with tumor mapping

A Head & Neck case report described use of Xeos’ Aura 10 mobile intraoperative PET/CT system to image a resected specimen in recurrent oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

The report was authored by investigators from Vanderbilt University Medical Center and published online May 25. Xeos highlighted the publication in a June 11 company announcement.

In the case, a 79-year-old woman received neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy before surgery. Investigators performed specimen PET/CT immediately after resection using the mobile intraoperative system.

Specimen imaging showed two metabolically active residual tumor foci. The foci were separated by an 8 mm non-avid region that corresponded to treatment-related inflammation without viable cancer, according to Xeos.

Final pathology closely matched the specimen imaging findings. Xeos said the case showed a scattered tumor-regression pattern that was not fully characterized by conventional presurgical imaging alone.

“The scan identified two metabolically active tumor foci separated by a non-avid region corresponding to treatment-related inflammatory tissue,” the company said.

The authors noted that conventional preoperative PET/CT can have limitations when predicting pathologic response after neoadjuvant immunotherapy. The case report explored whether intraoperative specimen imaging could help narrow the gap between presurgical imaging and final pathology.

Aura 10 is a mobile specimen PET/CT system designed to image excised surgical tissue in the operating room. Xeos describes the system as providing high-resolution 3D molecular imaging of resected specimens.

The publication is a single case report. Its findings do not establish clinical performance across a broader head and neck cancer population.
