The Focused Ultrasound Foundation has launched the International Focused Ultrasound Society, or IFUS, as a new organization focused on clinical practice and global adoption of focused ultrasound.

IFUS has been established as a program of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. The organization will expand the foundation’s clinical implementation activities and use its infrastructure, resources, and network, according to the announcement.

Core activities will include patient advocacy, coding and billing, clinical guidelines, training, credentialing, meetings, workshops, and partnerships with medical societies and industry.

Nir Lipsman, MD, PhD, will serve as inaugural chair of the IFUS board, according to the society’s FAQ document. Paige Rice is the launch executive director.

Focused ultrasound is a noninvasive therapeutic technology that uses high-frequency sound waves guided by real-time imaging to treat tissue deep in the body without incisions or radiation, according to the foundation.

More than 1M patients have been treated to date, and more than 180 indications are in different stages of development, the foundation said. The field has 35 regulatory authorizations worldwide, including 12 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“IFUS will help bring this technology into mainstream medicine worldwide,” said Neal F. Kassell, MD, founder and chairman of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation.

Membership is intended for clinicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, industry stakeholders, trainees, fellows, and others involved in focused ultrasound care, research, or implementation. Founding membership is being offered at no cost for the first year.
